That Song From The Bit Where They Did That Thing..

'What genre of music do you listen to?' - that question will forever baffle me.. I mean maybe long ago when music was classified based on which continent it came from, such a question could yield a meaningful answer. But in this day and age where genres are forever overlapping & constantly giving birth to bastard genres that sometimes don't even make sense, you really don't know where to start!

Back when I succumbed to such arbitrary measures I had labelled myself as an 'Alternative Rock' enthusiast for what seemed like forever, but only because arguably any song with a guitar in it could be allocated to that vast genre! And while I was generally unappreciative of all things (c)rap, I frequently found myself singing along to 'Rapper's Delight' by Sugarhill Gang! Wait a minute, that can't be right.. & how was it that I didn't own any Metallica albums even though I sheltered myself under a heading with the term 'rock' in it? That's when I realized that hey, just because I like this one song from this genre doesn't mean I have to like all the other songs in it! Heck, I didn't even like most of the songs on the album that housed the song I was so in love with that I'd already decided to have it played at my wedding! I like what I like because my damn auditory receptors dig the music, not because it's by this artist, from this genre or #1 on the friggin' Billboard for the last 10 years!

I feel it would be alot more plausible to group all songs that infiltrate our complex inner workings under two new super-genres: good and bad. Sure that makes the list subjective, but it's not like these new 'genres' are 100% objective anyway! It may be a bit too simplistic for some, but at least it'll stop 'Acid Rap!' people 'Methodical!' from 'Sacreligious!' inventing 'Morbid!' new 'Medievil!' genres 'Goop!' every 'Klack!' other 'Floss!' second!

But hey what do I know, I'm more into movies anyway.. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I juggle my eyes between 3 LCD screens & the open road while driving on the open road! My CD player hasn't collected dust yet, & is constantly being violated by whatever songs I 'buy' off the internet.. Does that mean I only go to Virgin to buy DVD's? Not really. I do attack a certain (legit) genre over there: Soundtracks! I will never really understand my obsession with these cheap attempts of robbing movie fanboy's of their parent's hard-earned cash.. There's obviously alot of bias involved (no way in hell I'm buying the soundtrack to 'Crossroads'!), but I usually find myself succumbing to the tunes a whole lot faster than to a conventional 'album'. It may be the variety, but I'm sure alot of you music gurus out there have some soundtracks you yourself treasure. So without further ado, here are a few of my most prized soundtracks:

Cult classic movie with a
very unique soundtrack that
definitely grows on you.

Forget the fact that it's one of the best
musicals ever, I'm pretty sure people
would hunt me down & kill me if I forgot
to mention this classic!

It's probably my undying love
for the movie, but I can never get
sick of the songs on this soundtrack!

One of those few soundtracks
I heard before seeing the movie,
only to be somewhat disappointed
after seeing the movie!

Hard to explain how as a teenager
I'd become accustomed to waking
up to this oldschool soundtrack..
until you hear it, that is!

Worth being here if only for the fact
it has The Cardigans on it!

When you have Natalie Portman on the
cover and Zero 7 & Thievery Corporation
inside, you just can't go wrong!

Other worthy mentions: Last Days Of Disco, Studio 54, Trainspotting, The Motorcycle Diaries, Spanglish, Tomorrow Never Dies, Mission Impossible, Charlie's Angels..

Any soundtracks you'd like to add to the list?

Sneakers: A movie so good it got me watching the special features, something I (unfortunately) almost never do!

'What genre of music do you listen to?'..well I think it is a typical Q now ..coz u can't classify music now that what I think. but if I have to answer the Q I would say indie and alternative.
The Cardigans were my favs till I found lifehouse and Trespassers William.

- Run Lola Run
- Saturday Night Fever

Hey it's nice to see you blogging again ^_^

Hmmm, I really liked Pride & Prejudice soundtrack, Disney's Soundtrack (especially the 90s movies), and Shrek was good too. My mind is blank right now but I'm pretty sure there are some soundtracks worth mentioning but I cannot seem to recall them *Agh*

tinkerbell: Thanks :) Hmm haven't watched the series yet, but Scrubs has a killer soundtrack! Go JD!!

your battlefield: Hahaha, I so know what you're talking about! I will hear the same 3 songs over and over and over.. Like the Energizer (or was it Duracell?) bunny!

maroon: Hmm not sure you got my bashing the whole question concept :P But The Cardigans are great, & Babatunde from Lighthouse has a killer voice! (as gay as that sounds..)

tooomz: Wow, no rush to be first this time? I'm impressed! ;P

I saw the movie Life Less Ordinary, & the soundtrack looks like it hais some not-so-ordinary songs on it (Oasis, Prodigy)-yabeela! Haven't watched Veronica Mars yet :P Glad we agree on something for the 2nd time ;)

Good morning :)

dr.lost: Didn't expect you to understand because you just look for bass! New post for me, or do you want another idea for yourself? :P

delicately realistic: Hahaha! Knew you'd dig this one! The disco albums are classic, I know! Bes kheft I get stigmatized as a homo so I kept them bell 'Worthy Mentions' section :P

Dirty Dancing 2 - how'd I forget that one?! & Notting Hill will forever be the 'Ain't No Sunshine' album, love that song! Glad you liked it :)

fuchsia spunk: I got LOTR soundtrack too! That stuff's great for cooling down! ;) & 'Scotty Doesn't Know' is classic!! :P Haven't heard the 13 going on 30 track, but Vanilla Ice?! I don't think so :P Finally, haven't watched the OC either, so can't convey my opinion.. GREASE LIGHTENING!! ;)

3baid Hahaha, I sooo know what you're talking about! You should definitely research into it if it's just for one song!

Here's a tip: if you really liked one song from a movie, wait for the credits to roll & they list all the songs they played during the movie at the end in little clumps, whether they are or aren't on the soundtrack! ;)

erzulie: Ahh yes, The Wiz fan! :P

Wallah I actually wanna watch Singin' In The Rain, because the song's pretty damn catchy! 3ad thakarteeny eb Marry Poppins! Dammit should've mentioned that one.. Also saw a bit of West Side Story & that seems to have kickass track!

Definitely should've mentioned QT (Quentin Tarantino), especially since I'm a big fan! Bes I don't actually have the Pulp Fiction soundtrack! 'Miserlou' is basically all I've held onto from that movie! The Jackie Brown soundtrack's pretty cool, though..

Finally, Saturday Night Fever definitely has one hell of a soundtrack (Bee Gees & that Walter Murphy Beethoven take)! Great additions :)

temetwir: That post would take forever, trust me! Bes I gotta say it again, Sneakers is one helluva movie! It's kinda old (early '90s) bes trust me, quite the masterpiece! ;) Hahaha @ the WV incident, it gets annoying I know!

fallen angel: Hey, nice to see you back here :) Disney has some of the best soundtracks! Aladdin, The Lion King & The Jungle Book to name a few! Shrek was also pretty cool, I got it for 'I'm a Believer!'-damn you Smashmouth! :P Hahaha, yeah I know when you're on the spot your mind goes blank, now worries you brought up some important additions :)

i never get soundtracks. like dr. lost said, only one or two songs are usually good and they will be the ones that remind you of the movie if you really liked that movie. i would rather buy artist's CD's mara wa7da. but now that i think of it, i did buy ONE soundtrack before, it was years ago. the soundtrack for Braveheart. it was just music, but i was sooooo inlove with it and for the longest time thats all i heard in my room and in my car lol again, i think it was just cause i loved the movie soo much!

anyway, nice collection you got there. very unique :)

dishevelled: Welcome aboard the Grease loveboat! ;) & never really bothered going near A Walk To Remember but after checking out the songs on the track (Switchfoot, Toploader) must say it seems pretty aight ;) If only Mandy Moore wasn't involved - oh wait, she was in the damn movie! :P

adaydreamer: There you go! Braveheart is an excellent choice! Haven't really heard it myself, but James Horner is da bomb! Other great composers (for those who care): Hans Zimmer, Gustavo Santaolalla, Harry-Gregson Williams.. Plus you reminded me of the them for The Last Of The Mohicans, that was awesome! I appreciate the input, thanks ;)

zizotime: Not as interesting as MMHMMMMMMM!! :P

nunu: I'll take that as a compliment, thanks! ;)

krispy dixie: Ohoo weyach & that soundtrack! Yoba it's soooo 3adee! :P Bes zain we agree on 2 tracks ;) Damn right my post has the rhythm! Gracias :D Lemme just say you this though: So You Think You Can Stand Up?! :P

krispy dixie: Hahaha, you're taking this post seriously huh? :P I already voiced my regrets at leaving out QT's soundtracks in my response to erzulie, but I'll say it again here: Sorry QT! :P Cool Runnings was a pretty sweet film, bes haven't come across the soundtrack; but if Hans Zimmer is part of the roster it can't be too bad :P Tarzan was too crappy a Disney 'experience' to merit a soundtrack in the first place! But I guess Phil Collins is aight ;) Emperor's New Groove was an okay Disney attempt; Tom Jones is in the soundtrack?! Interesting.. :P

jiji: 3ad you so fit the rap persona! ;P Props for System of a Down & Lenny Kravitz, but I gotta ask: did you read my whole post?! :P Guess you're not a soundtrack person :P Glad I got you remembering the good old days :)

temewtwir: Wow, didn't actually think anyone payed attention to my movie recommendations! :P Hehehe, yeah I know those computers sure as hell ain't no 20th century Macs! But in spite of that I feel the movie aged pretty well!

I gotta say I disagree, though; the 'funny' bits to me were the best part! Call me old-fashioned, bes ga6at-hom were such a refreshing change from today's sexually driven jokes!

'You know I could have been in the NSA, but they found out my parents were married!' - priceless!

The cast was gold (including Ben Kingsley), as was the whole rhythm of the film; glad you enjoyed it! :)

Now here's the interesting stuff, some of the characters were inspired by real people, check out these links

Enjoy ;)

krispy dixie: I disagree :P

gotta go with that lost doctor on this one...not really into soundtracks...that said, 7tenths hit the nail on the head with the garden state ost...it is beyond amazing...that and cruel intentions...but what about the matrix ost...the metal kid in me was overjoyed to hear 'wake up' by rage against the machine in that movie...which brings me to question what songs would make up the soundtrack to your life?
1.birth: something classical...i mean it was the birth of moi.
2.whenever i walk into a room: 'get low' by lil' jon
3.when i meet my future wife: 'slow motion' by juvenile
4.on my wedding night: barry white!!!!!!!
5.death bed: 'the end' by the doors.

Matrix was aight, I especially liked Rob Dougan's 'Clubbed to Death' :) Soundtrack to your life? I'm not going to bother asking what brought that up! 2 & 3 are smokin', but I thought 'Wicked Games' was going to be your wedding song! :P

krispy dixie: Check out 'Teardrop' by Massive Attack, beats your song :P

How about the soundtrack for Snatch? Another great one.

Especially "Disco Science" by Mirawis. It's the song that is played when they set the dogs on the rabbit for a bit of a chase.

The Matrix is also good...I like the sequal's song "Zion" by Fluke.

You do need to go out and buy some Metallica. :P

dalal: Hey, welcome here! Glad you bothered commenting on an older post! :) That's one heck of a list you got there! Can't say I'm familiar with all those soundtracks, but am definitely interested in a few, thanks for the tracks! :)

Rules of Attraction was an amazing movie, am sure it must have one hell of a track! :) Kill Bill had some sweet tunes, as did Pulp Fiction! Rock on QT! You should check out the Jackie Brown soundtrack, a bit more soul than the other 2, but waaaaay cool! :) Ocean's 12 had this song I was dying to get but wasn't on the track, the one where that dude was doing aerobics; in case you're actually reading this, it's The A La Menthe by Nikkfurie - 'tis sweet! ;) I loved Curse of Monkey Island! But damn that was a hard game!! I should definitely check out the Eternal Sunshine, especially since that movie was friggin' amazing! I actually have That Thing You Do - 'My little wiiiiiiiiiild one!!' Such a kickback to the Beatles era! ;) Vanilla Sky had some aight tunes, & I actually heard about that Les Triplettes French cartoon, wasn't it nominated for best song in the Oscars? Finally, found Elizabethtown a bit disappointing, so I'm not gona bother checking out the soundtrack since my opinion will be biased! :P

Phew, that was long! But hey, long comment merits a longer reply! ;) Well at least over here.. :P

Hahahaha, I will do my best young padowan! Basically, it's via a mechanism known as tags :)

For bold, put < b > at the start of the word/term (opening the tag) & < /b > at the end of it (closing the tag) - btw without spaces between the '<', 'b' & '>' (I just did that 3alashan ye6la3 the term, o may7awel bold!) For italics, simlarly open with < i > & close with < /i > (man I'm a crap teacher!) :P Hope I helped ya little trooper! ;) Thanks again for stopping by :)
