The Godmother!

" I'll Make You A Machbous
You Can't Refuse! "

We've all seen a wide variety of mob movies (if not, go watch the first two Godfather movies now!) but they all seem to have one seemingly universal constant: a fearless, intimidating & deadly figure aka 'the don'. In my opinion, none were as memorable as Don Corleone, flawlessly portrayed by the late Marlon Brando (may he RIP). "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse", "Keep your friends close, & your enemies closer", and the list goes on! I mean is it just me, or do you find yourself wishing you were at least 1% Italian after watching one of these movies?! .. Well, except maybe for those Leslie Nielsen flicks..

Then it hit me! In some metaphorical kind of sense, we (the Kuwaiti/Bahraini/Saudi population) already have our very own 'Don' in the family: our grandmother(s)! Okay, so maybe I won't get a Nobel Prize for this epiphany (stretching it?); I mean for starters they're not even the same gender (..although..)! But the more I think about it, the more I want to go buy my grandmother some flowers just so that I don't find myself 'sleeping with the fish(es)' anytime soon!

In order to back up such a bold statement you can bet your pastrami I've come up with a dozen (plus 2) similarities shared by these charismatic figures. I just hope I'm not isolating anybody, & my condolences to those of you that lost your grandmothers. Don't feel left out if you haven't had the honour of meeting them, your parents (& you) will eventually transform into one whether you like it or not! Well, here goes:

I. They always stress the importance of family!

II. Outsiders are enemies until proven otherwise!

III. They resent outside food (or as our don eliquently put it: 'jungle food') & always favour home-cooked meals, preferably prepared by their very own hands!

IV. They force-feed you into obesity!

V. They almost always dress in black & own these ridiculously huge shades from some non-existent era (hence the amazing editing that went into the above picture)!

VI. Their house smells like mothballs! .. Wait, is that just us?!

VII. If they call you directly, you know you're in some deep s**t!

VIII. They have money.. Lots of it!

IX. They rarely ever go out, & when they do show up at a public occasion they're always accompanied by at least 2 members of the 'family' aka body-broads!

X. You never say no to them! Heck, you can't even contemplate it without breaking a sweat!

XI. They can never make friends with other 'dons'!

XII. Tradition is their first, middle & last name; with reminscing about 'simpler times' being their favourite pastime.

XIII. Technology just isn't their thing! (Hence, me having the guts to write this post!)

XIV. Their smile shares a schedule similar to that of the lunar eclipse!

Again, as always this is not to be taken seriously (spare me the drive-by's)! But please feel free to share some of your family's well-kept secrets :)

Murderball: So mind-numbingly good that simply calling it a 'documentary' should be considered a crime - it's an experience!

LOL! Some of the points are so true.

1, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 12 and 13 apply to both of my grandmothers!

Force-feeding people is my maternal grandmother's hobby. Feeding people and making sure her sons/daughters/grandchildren have had three meals a day is like her goal. She calls us every day around lunch time (3pm-ish) and says "ha tighadaitaw wila lail7een? Shino ghadakum ilyoum?" oo when she's satisfied with my (or brother/sisters') answers, she hangs up (she almost never says "bye" she just says "ok" and hangs up before I have a chance to say something!) and calls my aunts to check if they ate or not.

Lol I remember a couple of years ago an American journalist came to interview her about the Kuwaiti POWs (my uncle is still a POW) and she refused to start the interview until he finished his cake!

I can agree to some of your points but the fact of the matter is without our Godmothers we will not be here today :P Hence take care of what you say because regardless of how safe you think you are from them finding out they ALWAYS KNOW things, even things that they don't see with their own eyes :P

Loved your post as always!! Too cute...I definately saw my Grandmother as "The Don" (may she rip)...apparently she was one hot babe back in the days and didn't take crap from no one...Whenever I stand my grounds in an argument with my Mom...she'll yell..."Your just like my mother!"...guess I take after her in stubborness, henna and smoking! Now if I could just get the machboose right, I'll be fine! :)

I recognize a few grandmas from your post. They rule with an iron fist. My great grandma used to give us fruits and force feed us that, she was probably remembering the prehistoric time she lived when the only fruits she knew where dates and knar and bambar.

zizotime: Hahahahaha, you've been dying to post the first comment to write this?! I'm starting to think that picture actually suits your personality :P Btw you missed an 's' - KAAAAK! :P

idip: Thanks! :) Glad you enjoyed it & sorry about your grandmothers (may they RIP), but hope this post rekindled some fond memories :)

fayoora: I'm assuming you aren't acquainted with Roman numerals :P But 300's is close enough ;)

300 - Hahaha, soo true! But more so with the Godmothers :P

301 - Sometimes it's just creepy how much they know!

302 - Okay hold on a sec! I don't recall any Mob movies mentioning machboos or chay 7aleb! .. Oh wait, you're just talking about grandmothers? My bad :P

303 - Thank God my grandmas grew out of that phase! :P

Allah esalmech :) Thanks for contributing, those were some great additions ;)

dandoon: Hahaha, glad you could relate :)

Hahahahahaha, that is sooo true!! She's (paternal grandmother) always asking what we ate, & offers to send us whatever she's making! & why do they never say bye?! Daymen she just grunts chena mo 3ajebha & shits the phone!! Which is ironic because when she picks up the phone she vocalizes the most innocent 'aloo?', even amidst a zaffa!

'3ASAK EL 6AIR E6AYREK! YAL -' RING RING! .. 'Aloo?'

Hahahaha, again I totally understand with the stanger-must-eat-food principle!

Thanks for the laughs & those superb additions! ;)

temetwir: Glad you liked it :) Hahaha, that's one heck of an amazing post! Get rid of that link so that people don't visit it & find my post just bland after that insane list! I especially liked the bit about '5 names for cars' & '10 names for girls'! I got another one for ya: When we're really passionate about what we're saying our arms keep flailing about our body! :P Thanks for the link, & dude I appreciate all kinds of humor! ;)

purgatory: So it wasn't just me!! Thanks for restoring faith in my nostrils :)

nonaw: Hahaha, glad we've come to an agreement :) & hell yeah grandmas & Godfather rock!

jacqui: But what (grand)mama don't know can't hurt her! ;)

miss cosmo: Heyy! Glad you liked it, & you flatter me too much! :) & I know, isn't weird how good lookin' our grandparents were back in the day?! I mean what am I gona look like in 40 years?! Sorry to hear about your grandma, may she RIP.

PS. Be sure to contat me when you get that machboos right ;)

jewaira: Thank you, glad you it amused you :) Nice to see a new face, stick around! :P

don veto: I kind of predicted I'd be attracting some 'dons' with this post :P

Hahaha, why are grandmothers so obsessed with dates (& I'm not talkin' about the kind that involves 2 people)?! She keeps harassing me about how I'm missing out, & tries to imply I'll die of malnourishment if I don't eat them! Hey I can't help it, the texture is just too weird for me! Thank God she doesn't have any bambar or knar to threaten me with, whatever those are.. :P

krispy dixie: Halla walla! Glad you approve oh wise one! ;) Bes la, seriously thanks, me mucho flattered :) I really like VII too.. Heck, I wrote the post - I love 'em all! :P

zizotime: Taw il nas! :P 20 hours 3alla ma tegra post?! Sorry about your grandmothers, may the RIP.

As for your Arabic sayings: 6OZ! Keep them to yourself :P Bes you'd be surprised how they refuse to stop cooking! 3ad funny thing is, mashalla it always (.. well, almost always) tastes great! :)

Yabela Lost! & hahaha at 'grandma of all weapons', you're getting creative ;)

miya fushi: Howdy :) Glad you liked it & thanks ;) Hahahahaha, I think the word you're looking for is expired (candy)! :P

tinker bell: Awww, I'm so sorry, may the RIP :( Wallah, like I said, the last thing I wanted to do was isolate someone.. Glad you laughed though ;) Sej enech good sport :P (Or just diggin' for some comments..)

PS. Join the club! .. Actually, I find it quite becoming :P

skunk: Thanks & 7ayak el blog :) also, thanks for that bit of info; I guess they've always been the underlying puppeteer manipulating the Godfather puppet! Sort of like how George Bush is president-ing :P & nah, krispy will live, she found the one (& only) way out:

XV. Their children's lives are more important than anything in the world

Their grandchildren's lives however.. & sadly, zizo has his own agenda :P

chai-7aleeb: Hey, thanks alot! 3ad an Oscar? Dude, I'd settle for an Emmy! :P Take care of your grandma ;) & welcome here :)

dr.lost: Well the house may smell like mothballs, but at least they don't have an FO (fridge odour) problem going on like some "controversial" people.. :P & we can only hope your posts will share the same fate (although highly unlikely) :)

zizo: Walla 3ad kaifhum! You knew the risks you were running by putting up your first photos on God's green earth! :P Ba6alee eb 3ainek! Madre meno yerid 3alla his comments every 5 minutes! :P Thanks for the da3aya, although seeing you put it in the comments section that kind of misses the whole point, ie. it's too late! :P

3baid: Glad we agree :)

sedna: Wallah I'd love to hook you up, but she's almost impossible to reach directly :P

mishmisha: First of all, welcome to my blog :) Second of all, that is so damn TRUE! Now I can finally remember why we stopped going to restaurants with my grandma! :P & this 'stealing' tendency isn't jut limited to restaurants, she loads up on hotel shampooes & soaps too! Oh and those vanity packs ba3ad (with the floss & string)! :P & hahaha at the swearing! I have her to thank for my extensive vocabulary in the art! ;) Thanks for the pointers & glad you enjoyed it :)

ni3na3ah: Hahaha, la I'm sorry my grandma don't smoke :P .. Well, she better not!

delicately realistic: THEY LOVE YOU TOO!

nunu: Allah yer7amha. But hey, at least you had the pleasure of meeting her ;) Hmmm.. Yabela immawaish! :P

laialy: Are you sure you weren't adopte or anything?! I don't recall our grandma's ever being 'cool' per se :P I mean they're lovable and all that, but I wouldn't party with them or anything! But your grandma.. Can she host one of my parties?! Pretty please!! :)

fallen angel: Glad you liked it :) Hahaha, you raise a good point! Well one of my granmdas ain't too conservative, but the other one is like the 'ideal muslim'.. Well until she starts swearing! :P A7la shey, she was a serious 'chick' (relax, I ain't hitting on her!) when she was younger! I guess this 180 degrees phenomenon is pretty common :P

adaydreamer: Hahaha, bel 3aks, I still ictures from her! :P & I know, it's like you can never be fat in their eyes! I mean it's great back when you're a kid, bes now lema kebart I don't need this kind of treatment! It's detrimental!! :P Love 'em to death ;)

dishevelled: That's why I (try to) do what I do ;) Thanks for letting me know, & glad 'twas to your liking :)

butterfly: Hey, welcome here! :) Thank you for the compliment(s), to say I'm flattered is to call the weather these days 'warm'! :) Sorry to hear about your grandparents (may they RIP), but glad you could relate ;)

sunshine: & I loved this comment! Thanks :D

mama fusla: Hey, nice seeing you around here & mucho thanks for the input :)

Geurilla interrogation - hahaha, so true! .. Crap, I think I'm next in line!!

Bribing - with her expired candy?! I don't think so! Maybe your grandmas aren't so cheap - hook us up! :P

Superstitious - why won't they stop spitting?!

S & D - I try not to watch them eat..

Grandma Bond - okay, you must have some seriously cool grandmas (allah ekhalekom 7eg ba3ath)! :P

Back To The Business - actually with us it's screaming, shouting & threats :P

Curses - so that's why they stopped showing up! :P

Family Favourite - hahaha, can't tell you what I'd do to be that person! :P

Wow, that's a damn good list! Kinda like the post within the post! :P Thanks for the great additions & keep it 'fusla' ;)

miya fushi: Exactly!! & then they go all like..

'Laish ma takel el 7alaw?!'

'Yoba hel 7echy back when Micheal Jackson was still black - mo il7en!!' :P

anon: Hahaha, so true :) I refuse to kiss her hands/head though, it's cheek-to-cheek for this rebel! ;)

- she'll use her cane as an aid for walking and a weapon against the kids when they get too loud :P

- she hands out money like it grows on trees.. better yet an evergreen !

- when she's bored she'll demand a party simply by stating "I want music and dance" we are expected to call in the extended family, set up the whole party and "No" is not even an option ;P

caff: Great add! (Which is pretty evident seeing that your comment got its own comment!) I guess it's imminent when their gran/daughters are gossip queens! Glad you liked it, thanks :)

diigmaa: Hmm, wanna trade granmdas for a week? My grandma maxes out the volume whenever they put her favourite show on (believe it or not, it's Wheel of Fortune), she needs a cane (for the walking bit, not hitting!), the evergreen she's been handing out from shrivelled up and died ages ago & I don't even want to imagine her popping & locking on the dance floor! But she sure does make a mean em6abeg! ;) Thanks :)

mishmisha: My grandma has yet to hook this brotha up! But I sure am glad she's taking her sweet time! :P Regarding the book, please define the term 'good' :P Anyway, it's probably just a side-effect of the ageing process.. Well that's what they blame it on anyway!

sunshine: I wonder if these informants get any job perks..

dr.andfound: Spot (mis)diagnosing is my specialty ;)

phatboy: Very subtle :P

msb: Sorry to hear about your grandparents, but glad to hear you ran into one of them; sure is nothing like them :) & I don't see that yakhthon ra7at-hom bit as a good thing, well except the unnecessary swearing-that rocks! :P

LOL this is so true. If theres one thing my grandma loves to do, its making sure you've eaten enuf and by enuf i mean stuff you like a thanks giving turkey. Whats worse is my moms already picked up on that habit. Bes to make up for it whenever i see my grandma she always gives me money which sorta makes all the hassel worthwhile lol

Don't forget that they nag you into getting married, unless they give you the excuse of not having much luck in Life " yoma intay laish 7athich jileel?". Even though you repeatedly emaphasized on the fact that marriage is not on your agenda right now!!

erzulie: Sorry, but I got a rep to keep up ;P

photoflow: High class grandmothers exist?! I thought those were rumors!

alia: Thank you, thank you :) Your comments flatter me, & I appreciate the sincerity :) Thanks for stopping by & making my day :) (you know you've made me happy when I use 3 smiley faces in one comment!)

dooda: Let me get this straight: you're getting paid to stuff yourself with food?? Should I run the whole 'kids starving in Africa' story by you, or has appreciation started to kick in?!

3abeer: To quote my (and all other) grandmother(s),

'That's the problem with 20th century women..'

dandoon: Be careful what you wish for :P

*waits patiently* :p

I think what do0da meant to say was that whenever he sees her, he hears her say the usual "you have to eat this" "why aren't you eating?" "you haven't eaten anything!" that all grandchildren have grown up hearing! But at the end of the zwara, my gran gives us all money so it makes her 7anna during lunch a bit less annoying:p

Okay, I must say I'm really flattered by all your attempts at punking back into posting, but I also gotta apologize for leaving you guys hanging. I'm not going to say I'm quitting, but I also can't say if I'm posting anything; but rest assured that if & when I do post something new, you'll definitely know (secrecy is not one of my better traits), until then I hope I've upset noone :)

fallen angel: Im right heeeere! Sorry dude, wish I could blame it on work, but I still find myself re-alpabetizing my DVDs from time to time..

laialy: No way! Your mom (aka 'om foo') actually reads my blog?! I'm so foo-lattered! :) But hey, in my defense, you post anonymously, you suffer the consequences! :P Thanks :)

adaydreamer: I don't function well under pressure!

3abeer: A better commenting attitude pronto!

zizotime: You mean 'quit' like you did, & then show up 5 days later with a new post? Or actually quitting? :P

nunu: Can't a brotha take a guiltless break?!

zizotime: Maybe I should just let you post for me, you seem to have alot of time on your hands..

delicately realistic: Whether or not I'm 'cut out' for blogging remains to be seen, but you've clearly lost your knack at commenting (those dates aren't even in chronological order!) :P

diigmaa: First of all, people should spell as they pronounce, so when you spell it next time it should go a little something like this yal Brit..

Daaahhhhhhhling! :P

Believe me, I don't do this to piss poeple off (which I seem to be doing), I just don't want to force a post (why does that sentence sound funny?).. & Ramadan is an excuse to stop! 3alaina o 3alaichm thanks :)

Hello,

A Kuwaiti blogger FourMe is suffering from Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a form of cancer.

A community of bloggers have put effort to create a website for her.
http://www.pray44me.com

It would be a great gesture if you can post about her website where people post prayers and give support to her.

We have no idea who's prayers are going to be answered. Please spread to the word, help FourMe fight cancer.

Thank you,
Anas
